By the 1950s, the introduction of antibiotics and other treatments for tuberculosis made the sanatoriums obsolete and cure chairs unnecessary. “When the TB years ended, a lot of them were sent straight to the dump,” says Catania, who still owns one and uses it for reading—until it lulls her into a doze. “They’re really good napping chairs.” Irving Wolpin's "Lawn Chair or Similar Article," patented April 12, 1938 U.S. Design Patent 109,239 .

According to Mack’s book, Bunnell produced his “Westport Plank Chair” in a basement workshop and sold them for $4 out of a retail store on the town’s main street. By 1912, a version called the “Adirondack Bungalow Chair” was being sold through W.C. Leonard’s department store in Saranac Lake, and copycats soon followed. Bunnell continued to manufacture the chair himself until about 1930, producing variations that included an alternate-facing tête-à-tête version and another that converted to a rocking chair. By the time Bunnell died of pneumonia in March 1933, his chair design had found its way beyond northern New York. The newspaper notice announcing his death hailed him as the “manufacturer of the world-wide known Adirondack camp chair.”

When it comes to selecting your material for your new chair, you have two different options. Both of these materials are referred to as poly-lumber. The difference, however, is whether or not the plastic is freshly made or made out of recycled plastic, which is called HDPE recycled plastic. Both of these materials are highly durable and will serve you well over the years. Of course, if you get a recycled plastic chair like the POLYWOOD AD5030WH, you will not only be getting a great chair but will also be helping the environment, since the plastic has been recycled.
The image above, showing the chair in the upright position, is identical to the original in position and comfort. The image in the middle shows the chair reclined to 50 degrees....a very comfortable snoozing position. The back is supported by the arms and curved back seat slat, and all pieces are screwed and glued with Gorilla Glue for the necessary strength. A recent Customer picked up some plans at my home and sat in one of the final prototypes. He found it very comfortable in the reclined position, and strong enough to hold his over 6' height and 210 lb. weight.

Like we said before, one of the biggest benefits of getting a plastic Adirondack chair is that they are so easy to move from place to place. While wooden chairs can easily weigh upwards of 50 or even 60 lbs., plastic models usually top out at around 35-40 lbs.
