Gilborn acknowledges that the multiplicity of designs and dearth of documentation make it difficult to be definitive about the chair’s heritage. But that, he says, exemplifies the wilderness spirit from which it was born. “Going to the Adirondacks you leave everything behind, including the rules of behavior and documentation,” he says. “It’s part fun and part irresponsibility.”

“I really think it was a marketing thing,” says Laura Rice, currently chief curator of the Adirondack Experience museum, which has both cure chairs and Westport chairs in its collection. “There were a lot of stores selling (cure furniture); that may have been his [Bunnell’s] intent.” She adds, however, that she’s never seen a chair with Bunnell’s modifications, and noted that the low profile of the Westport chair itself is not particularly suitable for someone in a weakened condition.

After settling on a design, he hired a local Westport Carpenter named Harry Bunnell to make a set of the chairs. Impressed by the design, Bunnell saw the commercial potential and began selling the chairs to Westport’s other visitors. Unfortunately, he… forgot… to ask Thomas Lee’s permission to sell the chairs. Bunnell filed for a patent on the design, and received one in 1905, despite not actually designing the chair. Bunnell sold the “Westport chairs”, made of Hemlock, for the next 20 years. Typically he would paint them green or brown, and he sold them directly to buyers.

Here are other brands/types at Costco.com for a bit less, but none are blue. (Costco has a different white chair in the stores now, for only $129.99 per chair. Made by "Leisure Line") Thank you for this. I ordered the polywood set that comes with the table. I guess it costs more than the white one in store but reviews are great and there’s also a 20 year warranty. Fingers crossed! Thank you for this. I ordered the polywood set that comes with the table. Given the abundance of options available to us, choosing the right Adirondack chair can be a daunting task. First, you must decide on how much you’re willing to maintain the chair. There is wood, plastic, and recycled plastic. Wood can have a beautiful traditional finish, but takes seasonal oiling to maintain it and can splinter.

Hey Becky, Did you clean the chairs really well before applying? This hasn’t happened to me, but I’m sorry you are having trouble. It may very much depend on how old the plastic is and if it is able to absorb the paint. Also did you happen to use a primer?
