The Highwood AD-KING1-ACE is our top choice for Adirondack chairs because it checks all the boxes. The most significant advantage that Highwood has over others is its remarkable high-grade polyethylene lumber material. Polyethylene lumber is designed to look like luxurious wood, but molded like plastic for comfort. This particular chair even can adjust your reclining angle, which the others cannot do.

“Our great specialty is to supply everything that an Invalid needs; but a stock so large and varied as ours necessarily runs into comforts and luxuries that well folks want,” reads an advertisement of the Sargent Manufacturing Company of New York, maker of a variety of invalid chairs.
A: Typically, poly furniture is stain-repellent, which means it’s not prone to stains. However, over time, you may find your poly furniture may accumulate some debris or dirt that’s difficult to get off with soap and water. This phenomenon may happen if you live in an area where wind or frequent storms kick up dirt or dust. Or, it may be more likely if you use your furniture daily, especially if you’re eating and drinking while using it. Combine 1/3 bleach with 2/3 water. Remove any decorative items on the furniture, such as cushions or tablecloths, to avoid accidentally staining them with the bleach solution. Apply the bleach/water mixture to your poly furniture, then let it sit on the surface of the furniture for a few minutes. You can also use a soft-bristled brush to work the bleach/water mixture into the grooves in the surface or to loosen difficult stains. Don’t worry — this won’t damage the surface or change the color of your furniture! Rinse thoroughly with a hose, then allow to air dry.
There are a couple of coordinating accessory furniture pieces produced by Polywood: ottomans and side tables. The matching furniture sets are great for those looking to outfit a backyard space in an eco-friendly manner.
The end product is I have 4 beautiful chairs, they are sturdy when I sit on them, and they fold beautifully. They are not the heaviest adirondacks I've seen, but they have a good weight behind them. A young adolescent could lift, but a smaller child might not be able to. When they fold, they are still rather big, but it is a nice feature if you want to move them around.
I used the plastic washers and tubes (highly recommend) and cedar boards but will try clear pine next.
1) Wood vs “Polywood” plastic— I was surprised at how much the polywood just felt like cheap plastic. However, it has held up over the summer really well as it still looks brand new. So I would buy the polywood/synthetic plastic again over wood.

Over time, the design has been tweaked and improved upon. Often contemporary Adirondack chairs will feature a seashell style rounded back, and a sloping seat base for comfort. These modifications were originally the idea of Irving Wolpin, who redesigned the chair in 1938 and also received a patent on it.
Choose Between Adirondack or Traditional Styling. Recycled plastic deck furniture is constructed in a very similar fashion as normal wood furniture. It is made from plastic boards that have been extruded to be dimensionally similar to dimension lumber. Each board is extruded from HDPE in the correct sizes with a wood grain texture on the surface. It is sawn and shaped to make the parts that fit perfectly together. Assembly is easy because parts fit tightly together like a puzzle (with instructions). This outdoor furniture is virtually maintenance free. The plastic is colored through out and is UV stabilized to never lose its color. The plastic lumber has no porosity so food stains are easily washed away. All of the fasteners are color coordinated poly carbonate coated steel. Therefore, the visible part of the fasteners will blend in with the furniture color but corrosion and rust spots will never be a problem. For superior consistency in our plastic lumber, we actually control the recycling process by buying the mixture of plastic refuse and separating the milk jugs from all of the rest of the plastic. We only use the milk jugs but sell the rest of the mixture to another processor. After confirming that we have only the HDPE plastic material, the raw plastic is washed and sifted to clean away all foreign debris. No sand, dirt, wood fibers, or other discordant riffraff is allowed. We produce only exceptional quality of Recycled Plastic Lumber. This ensures that our recycled plastic lumber has uniformly exceptional properties throughout. Hi Gina. I just used a kitchen sponge with a rough side. Not all of the chalky stuff came off, but they were better than when I started. The paint did just fine without getting all of the chalky stuff off first. I have exactly the same chairs with the same horrible chalky residue on them. Did you have to remove the chalky substance before painting? I went to Home Depot to buy my paint (ironically Satin Lagoon and a Satin Eden). The guy there told me to use TSP and steel wool to scrub off the white chalky residue, then dry then paint 2 coats. So far I have only scrubbed 1 chair (I have 4 lol) and it was exhausting. Just wondering if you scrubbed that off first or am I wasting my time. My friends think I am crazy to waste so much time painting 17.00 chairs lol.
When opened, they are super comfortable, stylish Adirondack chairs. When it’s time to go inside, they fold up for easy storage!
The significant reason you should consider purchasing an Adirondack Chair is because of the comfort level it will give you. These chairs are also custom made and are designed by considering special requirements of height and length of the chair.
